ABAX Milkwood Half Marathon

On Sunday, February 9, 2025, I participated in the ABAX Investments Milkwood Half Marathon, a race that has become a cherished highlight on my annual running calendar.

Set against the breathtaking backdrop of the South Peninsula, this event offers not only a challenging course but also an immersive experience in one of South Africa’s most stunning regions.

A Race Like No Other

The Milkwood Run, established in 1994, has grown in popularity over the years, necessitating a move to its current venue at the Soetwater Resort, nestled behind Kommetjie on the southernmost west coast of the Cape. The event offers three race distances: a 21.1km half marathon, a 10km race, and a 5km fun run, catering to runners of all levels.

The half marathon route is renowned for its scenic beauty and demanding terrain. Starting at Soetwater Resort, the course winds its way along the coast from Kommetjie to Scarborough, offering runners magnificent views of the coastline.

Embracing the Challenge

The race commenced at 6:30 AM, with the sun casting a golden hue over the horizon. The weather was cool and pleasant, providing ideal conditions for the run. As we set off, the initial flat stretches allowed for a comfortable pace, but soon, the route presented its signature undulating hills.

The ascent towards Misty Cliffs was particularly demanding. The climb tested our endurance, but the effort was rewarded with panoramic views of the ocean meeting the rugged cliffs. The descent into Scarborough provided a brief respite, with the gentle sea breeze offering a refreshing coolness.

The Allure of Misty Cliffs and Scarborough

Misty Cliffs, situated between Scarborough and Kommetjie, is part of a conservation village renowned for its serene atmosphere and unspoiled beauty. The area is characterized by its mist-laden cliffs, which create a mystical ambiance, especially during the early morning hours.

Scarborough, a quaint coastal village, exudes a tranquil charm. With its pristine beaches and close-knit community, it offers a peaceful retreat from the hustle and bustle of city life. Running through this village, with residents cheering us on, added a personal touch to the race experience.

A Glimpse Into Maritime History

One of the highlights of the route is the proximity to the Slangkop Lighthouse in Kommetjie. Commissioned in 1914 as a safeguard against shipwrecks along the rocky shoreline of the Southern Coast, the lighthouse stands as a sentinel over the ocean. Due to the outbreak of the First World War, it was not fully completed until 1919.

Standing tall at 33 meters, Slangkop is the tallest cast-iron lighthouse on the South African coast. Its powerful beam, visible from a distance of up to 33 nautical miles, has been a guiding light for mariners navigating these treacherous waters for over a century.

Beyond The Finish Line

Crossing the finish line back at Soetwater Resort was a moment of triumph. The sense of accomplishment was heightened by the stunning ocean views and the knowledge that we had traversed a course steeped in both natural beauty and historical significance.

Post-race festivities included local vendors offering refreshments, live music, and an opportunity to relax and reflect on the day’s achievements. It was a celebration of not just the race, but the vibrant community and the breathtaking environment that make the Milkwood Run a standout event.
