Its winter in Cape Town and that means rain. Paradoxically, the Western Cape is one of the rare parts of the African continent with a Mediterranean climate, which means we have a winter rainfall season, while the rest of South Africa is blessed with summer rainfall.

 

Yeah, we is special like that.

 

A wise man once told me hiking is a winter sport. I do prefer hiking in colder weather, tbh. This is purely a personal preference.

 

So, as we enter the rainy (hopefully) Cape Town winter, I thought I would write something about hiking in the rain.

 

I hope to debunk common misconceptions, share essential gear tips, provide safety precautions, and delve into the art of hiking in wet conditions.

What do u mean, its raining?

Despite the rain, the Western Cape’s Mediterranean climate provides a unique opportunity to explore misty trails, vibrant landscapes, and the serene ambiance of rain-kissed surroundings.

Waterproof clothing options, including jackets, trousers, and ponchos, will keep you dry even in the heaviest rain.

 

Proper footwear is crucial for wet terrain, such as waterproof hiking boots or trail shoes. The latter have drainage! How cool is that? So no matter how wet your shoes (and socks) get, they will dry fast… relatively! 

 

Accessories like waterproof backpack covers, gaiters, and a hat with a brim will further enhance your comfort and protect you from the elements.

 

Wear a warm base layer of wool and/or synthetics. Avoid cotton as it tends to retain water.

Before embarking on a rainy day hike, it’s important to assess trail conditions and check weather forecasts to ensure your safety.

 

Hiking can be physically demanding, so stay hydrated and maintain have enough food and snacks to keep your warm and provide adequate energy. 

 

A small flask with hot water for tea/coffee/hot chocolate is one of my personal essentials. 

 

Stay safe on slippery surfaces by watching your step and using trekking poles for added stability.

 

Always plan your route and inform someone about your hiking plans, considering the weather conditions and trail difficulty.
