The Kromrivier Hiking Trail

A kid-friendly (Really!) Guide to the Kromrivier Hiking Trail in Limietberg Nature Reserve.

Hidden within the majestic Du Toitskloof Mountains of the Winelands lies the Limietberg Nature Reserve, a sprawling 102,000-hectare expanse of natural wonder.

This reserve boasts fynbos-covered slopes, dramatic kloofs, and an array of hiking trails waiting to be explored. Trail Highlights

The Reward

Amidst the plethora of hiking options in Cape Town, the Kromriver Hike remains an enduring favourite, a testament to its natural allure.

The 8 km out and back trail promises a rewarding experience from the very start. Following the river up the valley, the path unveils breathtaking views of surrounding mountain peaks. As it veers into the kloof, the hike traverses a magical indigenous riverine forest, setting the stage for a unique and immersive journey.

Basking Blommie

The trail meanders back and forth along the river, inviting you to dip into their refreshing waters. The first waterfall greets you with a temptingly cool pool, a delightful spot for a well-deserved picnic.

However, the trail’s pièce de résistance lies in the second, larger waterfall. To reach this spectacle, a 10-meter climb up a cliff face awaits the adventurous, facilitated by a sturdy chain ladder.

This daring ascent is rewarded with a deep, translucent rock pool.  For those seeking an adrenaline rush, the opportunity to leap off the rocks into the invigorating, ice-cold water is not to be missed.

Easy Peasy

As you navigate the trail, keep a keen eye out for the diverse flora and fauna that call Limietberg home. Sightings include frogs gracefully diving into the water, toads, and glimpses of fish in the pools.

Although baboons inhabit the area, they rarely make appearances along this hike.

The vegetation along the trail is a marvel, transitioning from indigenous mountain fynbos to a riverine forest in the wetter sections of the kloof.

At the waterfall we spotted an abundance of the Cape’s famous red disas like red kisses between the vibrant greenery.

Pro-tip:

Opt for a summer hike to fully embrace the trail’s beauty. While the river may pose challenges during winter, the icy waters provide a refreshing contrast even in the warmer months.

Pet Peeve: Despite this we found at least 30 hikers without permits on the trail.

Don’t be those people. The permits are there to protect the environment. Do the right thing. Be lekker!

Its just a hill! Get over it!

  • Swimming gear for the inviting pools is optional. Sometimes we just dive in with our clothes on.

Snack time!

Children:

  • The trail is relatively flat but includes rocky sections and some scrambling. It’s suitable for families, though younger hikers may need a piggyback along the way.
  • We had kids aged 2.5 – 16 yrs. All but the older boys braved the 10m long chain
Papa's Monkeys

Cost:

  • Be prepared to pay R47.50 each way at the toll for the Huguenot Tunnel when using a normal car.
Kid-friendly, I said!

Getting There:

  • Follow the N1 from Cape Town to the Huguenot Tunnel, then take the first road on the right to the parking lot. This trail head also serves as the starting point for the Elandsrivier Trail.
  • Dont be like me and instruct people to turn left. Left will take you over the bridge and into the river and not in a good way. There is a sign that says “Molenaars” with a river symbol. Go that way!

Trail Route:

Marked by yellow boot prints on rocks and cairns built by previous hikers, the path initially leads over a small cliff. The trail follows the river with multiple criss-crossings over the water. The path eventually turns up the ravine to the first waterfall.

Hop! Skip! Jump!

Duration:

The hike takes approximately 4 – 6 hours for a round trip, depending on stops and swim breaks.
