The Red Hill (hell?) Race

On Saturday, January 25, runners from all over gathered for the annual Red Hill Race, hosted by the dedicated Fish Hoek Athletic Club. Known for its spectacular routes and welcoming atmosphere, the Red Hill Race has become a favourite on the South African running calendar. With four race distances—a challenging 42 km marathon, the iconic 36 km classic, a scenic 13 km, and a fun-filled 5 km run—the event offers something for everyone.

This year, I chose the 13 km race, a “baby version” of the classic and marathon distances. It was a decision borne out of necessity rather than preference; a lack of fitness left me unprepared for the grueling 36 km route. But what the 13 km lacked in length, it made up for in breathtaking scenery and a challenging course, beginning with a tough 3 km climb up Black Hill. The weather added an extra layer of difficulty, with soaring temperatures and oppressive humidity testing even the most seasoned runners.

Despite the heat, the race was a rewarding experience, and I was thrilled to support the Fish Hoek Athletic Club once again, having last participated in 2020 before the disruptions of COVID-19 and other commitments.

The Race Routes: A Scenic Challenge

The Red Hill Race features four distinct distances, each designed to offer a unique perspective on the Cape Peninsula’s stunning landscapes. Here’s a closer look at each route:

42 km Marathon

The marathon route is a test of endurance and mental strength, drawing runners deep into the heart of the peninsula. Starting in Fish Hoek, participants make their way through picturesque coastal towns and rugged mountain passes. The route includes a long ascent up the infamous Red Hill, a climb that rewards runners with panoramic views of False Bay and the surrounding fynbos-covered slopes. The descent offers a reprieve, but the undulating terrain ensures that only the fittest reach the finish line with energy to spare.

36 km Classic

Often referred to as the crown jewel of the event, the 36 km classic combines elements of the marathon with its own unique challenges. This route has long been a favorite among seasoned runners, thanks to its demanding yet rewarding profile. The classic follows a similar trajectory to the marathon, with the added allure of its storied history and the camaraderie it inspires among participants. For many, completing the classic is a rite of passage, a testament to their dedication and resilience.

13 km Race

The 13 km route, while shorter, is by no means a walk in the park. The race begins with a punishing 3 km climb up Black Hill, a section that tests both physical and mental stamina. The ascent is steep and relentless, but the reward lies in the sweeping views at the top. From there, the route levels out, winding through undulating terrain before descending back towards Fish Hoek. The scenery is nothing short of spectacular, with vistas of the ocean, mountains, and indigenous flora providing a stunning backdrop.

5 km Fun Run

The 5 km fun run is a celebration of inclusivity and joy, attracting families, beginners, and anyone looking to experience the thrill of the Red Hill Race without the intensity of the longer distances. This route meanders through Fish Hoek, showcasing the charm of the town and its friendly atmosphere. It’s a reminder that running is not just about competition but also about community and enjoyment.
