Basheerah’s Birthday Bashe!
Bastille Day Trail Run in Franschhoek
A Celebration or Two
In July this year, I had the privilege of participating in the Bastille Day Trail Run in Franschhoek, a charming village in South Africa’s Western Cape.
This event combines trail running with the historical legacy of the French Huguenots, who sought refuge in this Southern African enclave.
To make the day extra special day, we celebrated Bashe’s birthday on July 14th, Bastille Day itself.

Damn right!
Historical context: What the French?
In the late 17th century, France experienced religious conflicts, leading the Huguenots, French Protestants, to face persecution.
Seeking religious freedom and safety, many Huguenot families embarked on a challenging journey that brought them to Franschhoek, where they would leave a lasting mark on the region’s cultural and winemaking heritage.
Bastille Day in Franschhoek
July 14th is Bastille Day, an annual celebration commemorating the storming of the Bastille prison during the French Revolution.
In Franschhoek, this day acknowledges the village’s French roots with lively festivities.
The Bastille Day Trail Run is a highlight of these celebrations and served as the backdrop for our Bashe’s memorable birthday.
The Trail Run
The Bastille Day Trail Run offers a chance to explore the stunning landscapes surrounding Franschhoek.
Runners of all levels can participate in various distances, enjoying scenic views of vineyards, forests, and mountains, from 10km – 50km.
The trails’ challenging terrain adds an extra dimension to the experience, with steep ascents and rugged paths providing an exhilarating run. As we found out in December when we did the Om Die Dam run.
A Birthday To Remember
The Bastille Day Trail Run in Franschhoek is not just about running; it’s a celebration of history, culture, and the beauty of the South African landscape.
It also serves as a reminder of the enduring spirit of those who found refuge here, echoing the Huguenot refugees who arrived centuries ago.
With Bashe’s birthday coinciding with Bastille Day, the celebration took on added significance as we cherished the unique blend of history, culture, and friendship that defines Franschhoek.
Chasing Waterfalls... again!
As true hikers, we could not pass up a waterfall on the wonderful Chamonix wine farm where we were staying before checking out.
Au revoir!
