WW Tri Trail Run

Paul Cluver Wine Estate

An Adventure at the WW X Tri

UTCT Llandudno Aid Station Reunion

This weekend, the WW X Tri transformed the Paul Cluver Wine Estate in the breathtaking Elgin Valley into a hub of outdoor activity and camaraderie. Sponsored by Woolworths (you KNOW that goodie bag was goooood!) and attended by the Cape Tri Squad, the event catered to all fitness levels, offering everything from triathlons and trail runs to family-friendly walks.

For me, the highlight was the 15 km trail run, a rewarding and picturesque route that showcased the estate’s vineyards, forests, and fynbos. The mix of runnable paths and technical sections ensured it was both challenging and enjoyable, leaving every participant with a sense of accomplishment.

Paul Cluver Wine Estate: A Natural Playground

Paul Cluver Wine Estate is a jewel in the Elgin Valley, renowned for its sustainable farming practices, world-class wines, and commitment to preserving its natural environment. The estate’s trails are an extension of this philosophy, weaving through pristine landscapes that include rolling vineyards, lush forests, and fields of indigenous fynbos.

The recent rains have transformed the estate into a lush paradise. The vineyards, thriving under the summer sun, were a sight to behold. The forested sections of the trail provided welcome shade, while the open paths offered panoramic views of the valley.

WW X Tri: More Than Just a Race

The WW X Tri wasn’t just a competition; it was a celebration of health, community, and the great outdoors. With multiple activities on offer, the event had something for everyone:

  • Triathlons: Both a full and a lite version, catering to seasoned athletes and beginners alike.
  • 15 km Trail Run: A challenging yet scenic route ideal for trail enthusiasts.
  • Family-Friendly Walks: Perfect for a relaxed exploration of the estate.

The event emphasized accessibility and inclusivity, with a festive atmosphere that made it more than just a race. Kids played on the lawns, families cheered on participants, and friends gathered to celebrate each other’s achievements.

Cape Tri Squad: Building a Community Through Sport

A key participant in the event, the Cape Triathlon Squad is a local organization dedicated to making triathlons accessible to all, particularly communities that might not otherwise have the opportunity to participate. Their mission is to nurture young athletes, providing not just training but mentorship and encouragement to excel both in sport and life.

At the event, their presence was felt everywhere. Squad members, from young competitors to seasoned mentors, were actively involved, creating a warm and welcoming vibe. Their commitment to fostering a sense of belonging and achievement among all participants was evident and inspiring.

Running the 15 km Trail

The 15 km trail run was everything a trail enthusiast could hope for. Starting in the vineyards, the route quickly transitioned into forested paths and open fields of fynbos. The terrain offered a mix of runnable sections and technical trails, with enough variety to keep things interesting.

The views were nothing short of spectacular. With every climb, we were rewarded with sweeping panoramas of the wine estate, its patchwork of green fields and vineyards framed by rugged mountains. The recent rains had brought the landscape to life, with blooming flowers and vibrant foliage adding to the experience.

The festive atmosphere was a highlight. Fellow runners cheered each other on, and the volunteers were exceptional, offering water, encouragement, and plenty of smiles along the way.

The Elgin Valley

The Elgin Valley is more than just a beautiful backdrop for events like the WW X Tri. Known for its cool climate and rich agricultural heritage, the area is a haven for foodies, adventurers, and nature lovers.

After the event, we made a stop at the iconic Peregrine Farm Stall, a must-visit spot for anyone in the area. Over cups of coffee, we spent a leisurely hour teasing each other about the day’s adventures. Peregrine’s warm atmosphere, excellent coffee, and delicious treats made it the perfect place to unwind and reflect on the race.

A Family-Friendly, Festive Event

One of the standout features of the WW X Tri was its family-friendly approach. While the athletes were out on the trails or in the water, families enjoyed the day together, exploring the estate, relaxing in shaded picnic areas, and soaking in the festive atmosphere.

Woolworths, as a key sponsor, played a significant role in ensuring the event’s success. Their fresh and nutritious catering options kept participants energized, and their commitment to sustainability aligned perfectly with the ethos of both Paul Cluver Estate and the Cape Triathlon Squad.
