Muizenberg Peak: Sometimes the Best Views Are the Ones You Can’t See
If someone had asked me on Saturday night how many people I expected to pitch up for Leg 7 of our 2026 13 Peaks Challenge Cape Town, I probably would have guessed… not many.
The forecast wasn’t exactly inviting.
Cold.
Cloudy.
Rain on the way.
The sort of weather that makes your duvet whisper sweet nothings and convinces you that maybe next Sunday would be a better idea.
I’ll happily admit it.
I thought people would bail.
They didn’t.
Thirty-four hikers arrived.
Thirty-four.
At this point, I’m beginning to suspect the mountain bug is contagious.
The Mountain Doesn't Read Weather Forecasts
Sunday, 19 July was all shades of grey.
The clouds hung low over the peninsula, hiding the views we’d all been hoping for as we made our way towards Muizenberg Peak, Peak No. 9 of the 13 Peaks Challenge.
Normally, this summit rewards hikers with sweeping views across False Bay, the Cape Flats and the surrounding mountains.
Not today.
On this particular Sunday, the mountain was wrapped up in cloud like it had pulled the duvet over its own head.
Visibility?
Let’s call it… intimate.
The summit photographs could quite easily have been taken inside someone’s laundry.
And yet, nobody complained.
If the skies were gloomy, the group certainly wasn’t.
Thirty-four hikers means one thing.
Noise.
Laughter.
Endless conversations.
The occasional debate about whether that really was the trail.
Someone producing snacks at exactly the right moment.
The familiar faces who have become friends over the last few months.
And a few new ones discovering what our slightly chaotic Sunday tribe is all about.
It’s funny how mountains do that.
People who were complete strangers back in February now greet each other with hugs, inside jokes and offers of jelly babies.
Somewhere between Signal Hill and Muizenberg Peak we’ve quietly become a community.
That’s probably my favourite achievement of this challenge.
Progress Isn't Always Measured in Views
Would I have loved those spectacular False Bay views?
Absolutely.
Did we get them?
Not even close.
The summit was wrapped in thick cloud.
We couldn’t see the ocean.
We couldn’t admire the coastline.
We couldn’t point out where we’d already been.
But something struck me while we stood there taking photos in what looked suspiciously like the inside of a Tupperware container.
The view wasn’t the achievement.
Showing up was.
Because mountains don’t always reward you with sunshine.
Sometimes they reward you with resilience.
The fact that thirty-four people chose to climb a mountain knowing they might not see a thing says everything about how far this group has come.
Back in February, many were chasing summits.
Now they’re building character.
Nine Peaks Down
This challenge has changed.
Or perhaps it’s the people who have changed.
The conversations are different now.
The climbs feel different.
People who once questioned every uphill now simply put their heads down and get on with it.
The nervous hikers who hesitated on the scrambles earlier this year are now encouraging others.
The strongest hikers are still quietly helping those at the back.
Nobody is counting who gets to the summit first anymore.
They’re counting heads.
Making sure everyone gets there.
That’s growth.
Not just as hikers.
As people.
Nine peaks have now been completed.
Just pause for a moment and let that sink in.
Nine.
When we gathered on Signal Hill back in February, thirteen peaks sounded almost impossible.
Now there are only four left.
The finish line is no longer something we imagine.
We can almost touch it.
To Those Who've Fallen Behind
Every challenge has its own rhythm.
Life happens.
Work happens.
Children happen.
Illness happens.
Injuries happen.
Family comes first.
Sometimes mountains have to wait.
If you’ve missed a leg or two, this is your reminder that the challenge hasn’t left without you.
The mountain isn’t keeping score.
There is no prize for finishing first.
No medal for never missing a Sunday.
This challenge has always been about ordinary people doing something extraordinary in a way that fits around ordinary lives.

If you’ve convinced yourself everyone else is too far ahead…
They’re not.
One hike.
One peak.
One Sunday.
That’s all it takes to get moving again.
The only way to fail this challenge is to stop believing you belong on it.
And you do.
Perfect Timing
Almost as if the mountain had been watching the clock, the rain held off until we began our descent.
Then it arrived.
Not dramatically.
Not violently.
Just enough to remind us that winter was still very much in charge.
Personally, I thought the timing was impeccable.
The mountain had allowed us to tag Peak No. 9.
Then it politely suggested we head home.
Who are we to argue?
Nearly There
The finish line is no longer a distant dream.
It’s sitting just around the corner.
There are still mountains to climb.
There are still kilometres to walk.
There are still early Sunday mornings to negotiate.
But this remarkable group has already proved they have everything they need.
Determination.
Friendship.
Patience.
Humour.
And just enough stubbornness to keep saying yes when the weather says no.
I’m incredibly proud of every single person who’s joined this journey.
Whether you’ve completed every leg, missed a few or are quietly catching up in your own time, you’re part of this story.
And that’s what matters.
Four peaks remain.
The adventure continues.
