The Swart Tobie Trail is a rare find in South Africa’s hiking landscape — a 5-day wilderness slackpacking trail that traces sea, sand, and soul through the private farmlands of the West Coast.

Designed and run by the Wickens family of Groenvlei Farm, this trail loops through untouched Atlantic shoreline, the estuary-rich Olifants River, and the semi-arid inland plains of Matzikama.

Here’s everything you need to know before you go.

🙋 Swartobie Trail FAQs

Seal carcass

Is the trail safe?

Yes. There’s no dangerous wildlife (but beware of any seals you may encounter… those buggers can move), and it’s on private land. However, it’s remote — always hike with a buddy or group.

Can I hike it solo?

The minimum group size of 4.  The trail can accommodate 15 pax.

What’s the terrain like?

Mixed: sand dunes, rocky shore, dry riverbeds, salt pans. No steep climbs or technical scrambles.

Is it family-friendly?

Teens with hiking experience may cope, but younger children could struggle with the distances and terrain.

Do I need to carry all my gear?

No! Slackpacking means your main bag is transported between camps. You only carry day gear and snacks.

Final Thoughts

Time To Contemplate

The Swartobie Trail isn’t a hike you do once—it’s one that lingers in your bones.

It’s slower, quieter, and far more rewarding than many flashier, more “Instagrammable” hikes.

If you’re looking for solitude, storytelling, and the kind of silence that recalibrates you, this is the trail.

It’s West Coast wilderness. And it’s waiting.
