The Ultimate Guide to the Baviaans Canyon Hiking Trail (2026)

Distance, difficulty, accommodation, packing list, cost, booking and everything you need to know before you hike

The Baviaans Canyon Hiking Trail is one of South Africa’s newest multi-day hiking trails, officially opening on 26 February 2026 in the spectacular Baviaanskloof World Heritage Site.

I hiked the trail during its first season, in June/July 2026.

This is a five-day, approximately 76 km luxury slackpacking trail through rugged mountain country, canyons, kloofs and river sections.

And before you get too excited about the word luxury, there is one important thing to understand:

Luxury does not mean easy.

Your overnight luggage is transported between camps. Your legs are not.

This guide is for anyone considering booking the trail and wanting to know exactly what they’re signing up for.

For the stories, characters, scenery and inevitable hiking nonsense, read my Baviaans Canyon Trail Diary.

Before You Book: Baviaans Canyon Dates Sell Fast

This is probably the most important thing prospective hikers need to know.

Baviaans Canyon bookings open a full year in advance.

The organisers release bookings in four-month blocks, one year ahead, and the shoulder-season and winter dates are particularly popular.

They fly.

If you have a particular month or week in mind, don’t wait until you’re ready to book.

How to get ahead of the rush

  • Join the official Baviaans Canyon Facebook group.
  • Keep an eye on the official website.
  • Watch for announcements about the next booking release.
  • Have your preferred dates ready.
  • Be prepared to book as soon as the new block opens.

This is not a trail where I’d recommend casually checking availability six weeks before your holiday.

By then, your preferred date may already be history.

What Kind of Hike Is Baviaans Canyon?

The simplest description is:

A proper mountain hike with comfortable camps and no heavy overnight pack.

This is not a luxury walking holiday where you stroll gently from lodge to lodge.

Four of the five hiking days are approximately 15-18 km, and the route includes climbs, descents, rocky and uneven terrain, river sections, kloofs and ladders.

You need reasonable hiking fitness.

What slackpacking changes is what you carry, not what you walk.

You don’t have to carry:

  • Your tent
  • Camping equipment
  • Five days of food
  • Your sleeping bag
  • Your entire wardrobe

But you will still spend several hours a day on your feet.

Slackpacking removes the weight. It doesn’t remove the mountain.

The Five Hiking Days

The published route distances are:

Day Distance Approx. hiking time
Day 1 16.9 km 5-8 hours
Day 2 17.7 km 5-8 hours
Day 3 8 km 3-5 hours
Day 4 15.3 km 5-8 hours
Day 5 17.9 km 5-8 hours

Total: approximately 76 km

The shorter Day 3 isn’t simply an easy rest day. It is the Paradise Kloof section and is a very different hiking experience from the longer days.

Day 3: Paradise Kloof

Paradise Kloof is the day where you’ll want to put the watch away for a while.

The route includes slot-canyon sections, forested kloofs and river walking.

The final section involves walking approximately 500 metres up the river, with pools that can reach around half a metre deep.

Bring an extra pair of shoes that can get wet

Don’t arrive with your favourite hiking shoes and a determination to keep them pristine.

The river has other plans.

How Difficult Is the Baviaans Canyon Trail?

I’d describe it as a moderately difficult multi-day mountain hike.

The kilometres are manageable for a fit hiker, but the cumulative effect of five consecutive days is what you need to prepare for.

Expect:

  • Long hiking days
  • Ascents and descents
  • Uneven and rocky terrain
  • River sections
  • Some ladders
  • Variable weather
  • A day pack throughout the day

There are ladders on the route, including sections around three metres high. If you have significant vertigo, take that seriously when deciding whether this is the right trail for you.

How should you train?

Ideally, prepare with:

Long hikes: Work towards 15-20 km.

Back-to-back days: Your body needs to know what it feels like to hike when yesterday’s kilometres are still in your legs.

Hills: Don’t train exclusively on flat terrain.

Downhills: Your quads need preparation too.

Your actual day pack: Practise carrying the pack you’ll use on the trail.

You don’t need to be an elite athlete.

You do need to be comfortable spending several consecutive days hiking in the mountains.

Baviaans Canyon Accommodation

The camps are designed specifically for hikers and are one of the major attractions of the trail.

Accommodation is provided in comfortable sleeping units with two rooms and space for four people per unit.

Facilities include:

  • Extra-length single mattresses
  • Hot showers
  • Flush toilets
  • Solar lighting
  • Gas cooking facilities
  • Cooking and eating utensils
  • Fireplace
  • Braai facilities
  • Splash pool
  • Communal areas

You need to bring your own sleeping bag and pillow.

Bedding and towels are not supplied as standard, so pack a towel too.

The camps are comfortable, but they are still mountain camps.

Don’t expect a five-star hotel.

Do expect to appreciate a hot shower enormously after walking 17 km.

What Does Slackpacking Mean?

Your overnight luggage is transported between camps.

You hike with a day pack.

The trail provides plastic transport boxes for the luggage being moved between camps.

What goes in your day pack?

Keep it practical:

  • Water
  • Lunch and snacks
  • Rain jacket
  • Warm layer
  • Hat
  • Sunscreen
  • Sunglasses
  • Personal medication
  • Basic first aid
  • Phone/camera
  • Power bank
  • Anything you need during the day’s hike

What goes in your transported luggage?

Your overnight clothing, toiletries, sleeping bag and everything else you don’t need while walking.

My advice:

Don’t pack like you’re moving house just because somebody else is carrying your luggage.

You’ll still have to unpack and repack it.

This is one of the most useful pieces of packing advice I can give you.

What Should You Pack for Winter?

I deliberately chose winter because I love hiking in the Baviaanskloof at this time of year.

And it is cold.

Average winter daytime temperatures are around 16°C, while temperatures at night can drop to around 0°C.

Pack accordingly.

I would take:

  • Warm base layers
  • Fleece
  • Down or insulated jacket
  • Beanie
  • Gloves
  • Warm socks
  • Proper sleeping bag
  • Windproof/rainproof outer layer

The camps have splash pools, but in winter you may find yourself admiring them from a safe distance.

Is Baviaans Canyon Safe?

As with any wilderness hike, safety depends partly on preparation, weather conditions and responsible behaviour.

The trail organisers provide each group with a satellite phone for emergencies.

There is no immediate road access from every section of the route, and weather can affect conditions.

Carry your own basic first-aid supplies and medication.

And listen to the trail staff.

They know the route.

How Much Does Baviaans Canyon Cost?

Our 2026 hike cost R5,900 per person.

The trail price covered the hiking experience, accommodation and luggage-transfer arrangements associated with the trail.

Food, bedding and towels are not included.

Because pricing and inclusions can change, check the current official information before booking.

Is it expensive?

Not compared to those marketing gimmicks, I mean ‘caminos’ that have sprung up like weeds all over South Africa. There is only ONE Camino. It’s not in Africa.

This is not a Sanparks or Cape Nature budget hiking trail.

You’re paying for a small-group, professionally organised, luxury slackpacking experience rather than simply paying for access to a hiking route.

For my experience, the quality of the facilities and organisation made the premium understandable.

But whether it represents value for you depends on what you want from a hiking holiday.

How Many People Are in a Group?

The trail accommodates a maximum of 12 hikers per departure.

This is a deliberately small-group experience.

It also helps explain why popular dates disappear so quickly.

Limited capacity + bookings opening a year ahead + popular winter and shoulder-season dates = don’t procrastinate.

When Is the Best Time to Hike Baviaans Canyon?

There isn’t one universally correct answer.

It depends on what you want.

Winter

Best for:

  • Cooler hiking temperatures
  • Crisp mornings
  • Cold-weather hiking
  • Less heat during the long days

Downside:

  • Very cold nights
  • Potentially freezing conditions

Summer

Best for:

  • Warmer weather
  • More appealing water temperatures
  • Longer daylight

Downside:

  • Heat
  • Greater concern about thunderstorms and heavy rainfall

My choice?

Winter.

But that’s because I genuinely enjoy cold-weather hiking.

If you hate being cold, choose your season differently.

Who Should Hike Baviaans Canyon?

This trail is ideal for:

  • Experienced hikers
  • Fit recreational hikers
  • People who enjoy multi-day mountain trails
  • Hikers who don’t want to carry a full backpack
  • People who like wilderness but appreciate comfortable camps
  • Older hikers who are fit and comfortable with rugged terrain
  • Anyone wanting a more comfortable alternative to traditional backpacking

Think twice if:

  • You dislike long hiking days
  • You aren’t comfortable with steep terrain
  • Uneven ground gives you problems
  • You have significant vertigo
  • You dislike river crossings
  • You need cellphone reception every evening
  • Your current fitness doesn’t support several 15-18 km mountain days

10 Things That Blew My Mind About Baviaans Canyon

  1. Boot brushes for cleaning muddy hiking boots.
  2. Dedicated shoe stands for keeping footwear organised.
  3. Massage guns for tired legs after a long hiking day.
  4. Motion-sensor LED lights on the steps to the sleeping cabins.
  5. Private water closets and basins in every sleeping room. Two rooms per cabin, sleeping two people each.
  6. High-end fittings, and appliances.
  7. Charging stations in the communal area and at every bed.
  8. Discreet drying rails inside the sleeping rooms for towels and damp clothes.
  9. Hooks in the communal hut for your day pack, so you have somewhere proper to hang it rather than dropping it on the floor.
  10. Separate areas for arriving and departing groups, keeping the camp flow organised when one group is finishing and another is starting.

Final Verdict: Should You Book Baviaans Canyon?

If you’re looking for an easy luxury walking holiday, no.

If you’re looking for a proper multi-day wilderness hike where you don’t have to carry your entire camping life on your back, absolutely put this one on your list.

Baviaans Canyon combines rugged mountain hiking with comfortable camps, hot showers, luggage transfers and small groups.

You still have to climb the mountains.

You still have to walk the kilometres.

You still have to negotiate the rocks and rivers.

But when you arrive at camp, your overnight bag is waiting for you.

For me, that’s a very good compromise.

And if you’re considering going, my strongest advice isn’t about shoes, sleeping bags or fitness.

It’s this:

Watch the booking announcements.

The trail opens dates a year ahead, and the popular winter and shoulder-season dates don’t hang around.

Get your dates ready.

Get your hiking buddies organised.

And when that booking window opens, be ready to move.

Because Baviaans Canyon may be a new trail, but it certainly isn’t behaving like one.

This guide tells you what you need to know before booking.

My Baviaans Canyon Trail Diary tells you what happened when we actually put our boots on the trail.

That’s where you’ll find the winter mornings, the canyon, the river crossings, the characters, the trail banter, the unexpected moments and the five-day story behind the information in this guide
