Let’s learn how to make a positive impact on our outdoor adventures.

Plan Ahead and Prepare

Before setting off on your hiking adventure, it’s essential to plan and prepare.

Research your chosen area, familiarise yourself with local regulations, and obtain any necessary permits.

Take note of weather conditions, trail difficulty, and ensure you have the right gear and supplies.

By planning, you can minimise risks and ensure a safe and enjoyable hike.

Travel and Camp On Durable Surfaces

Stick to designated areas

When exploring nature, it’s important to stick to established trails and designated campsites.

By staying on durable surfaces like well-marked paths and established camping areas, we avoid damaging fragile vegetation and disrupting the delicate ecosystem.

Let’s tread lightly and stick to the beaten path, leaving nature undisturbed.

Dispose Of Waste Properly

How NOT to dispose of waste

Leave What You Find

Take Nothing But Photographs

Resist the temptation to collect souvenirs or disturb natural objects during your hike.

Leave rocks, plants, and other natural treasures as you found them, allowing others to appreciate their beauty in its natural state.

By leaving nature untouched, we show respect for the delicate balance of ecosystems and preserve the wonder for future generations.

Please note that SANparks have asked hikers not to build random cairns which disturb the environment. Cairns are important to hikers as they show the way, especially on wilderness hikes which have no marked trails. But in areas where the trail is clearly marked by a footpath or other signs, it is not necessary to build cairns.

Also do not leave behind painted stones which do not belong there.

And definitely don’t deface the trees and rocks with graffiti.

Grafitti is not cool

Minimise Campfire Impact

Only make fires in demarcated areas

Campfires can be a delightful part of any outdoor experience, but they must be managed responsibly.

Before lighting a fire, check if it is permitted in the area and adhere to any fire regulations.

Use established fire rings or pits when available and keep your fire small to minimize its impact. Always ensure the fire is completely extinguished before leaving.

By being responsible with campfires, we protect the environment and prevent the risk of wildfires.

Please note that NO FIRES ARE PERMITTED in wilderness areas or in the entire Table Mountain National Park.

Under no circumstances should firewood be collected in national parks.

Many wildfires are the result of people making fires or smoking cigarettes.

Respect Wildlife

Ribbit!

Encountering wildlife during a hike is a true privilege.

Observe animals from a distance and avoid any interaction that may disturb their natural behaviour.

Refrain from feeding or approaching them, as this can disrupt their feeding patterns and pose risks to both the wildlife and you.

Maintain a safe distance, use binoculars or cameras for closer observation, and remember that we are guests in their habitat.

Look. But don't touch the blommies!

Be Considerate of Others

The great outdoors is meant to be shared and enjoyed by all.

Show consideration to fellow hikers by yielding on the trail, especially when they are going uphill.

Keep noise levels to a minimum, avoiding loud music that disrupts the tranquillity of the environment.

Please note that boomboxes and other music devices are not allowed on the trails. If you must listen to music, please use a personal headset.

Let’s share the trail, be courteous, and promote a positive hiking experience for everyone.
